For too long, Western medicine has hardly recognized differences between men and women except for reproductive health. Clinical trials consisted primarily of men, yet results from those studies became the evidence for diagnosis and treatment for both men and women. Even medication (which was typically only studied in men) was simple “dosed down” for women.
Fortunately, the tide is turning, and healthcare providers are beginning to recognize that women not only experience life stages differently, they hay experience illness, including symptoms and treatments, differently than men. It’s important for all women to understand some of the new thinking in gender-specific care so they can advocate for themselves to get the healthcare they deserve.
